Dear olaus, let it Snow

In Rossland, B.C., a twelve-foot-tall bronze statue of Olaus Jeldness stands on a granite base outside the old Bank of Montreal Building and just across the street from the town’s only grocery store. Holding skis taller than he is, Olaus’ larger-than-life image presides over the nearest thing Rossland has to a busy intersection.

During our engagement, his adoptive mother asked me why I was committing to a broken man. But that came later. At seventeen, I had only just fallen in love with Donald and was miserable about leaving him behind for a three-week trip to Europe with my mother and sister. I consoled myself by buying postcards in each new town, and writing “I love you” in the local language: “Jeg elsker deg” from Oslo. “Jeg elsker dig” from Copenhagan. “Jeg älskar dig” from Stockholm.

It’s not a thing you’re supposed to say, but when my husband got long COVID, it created some wonderful things for us. I don’t recommend it, of course, and maybe I’m a Pollyanna finding a silver lining in this very dark cloud, but honestly, it’s opening up a lot for us, for him, for me.

My mom and I only do video calls now. I wear my hair down, because it helps her recognize me. I see her stare out the window at the empty bird feeder. She tells me she’s happy. After describing how delicious her English muffin was, she chirps, “I have no complaints.”
